Chiruu Yamanaka Collection

A collection of materials formally owned by Chiruu Yamanaka (1905-1977). While also a poet himself, Yamanaka introduced the European movement of surrealism to pre-war Japan by translating poems, publishing books, and organizing exhibitions. This collection consists of 61 letters from European surrealists, including André Breton and Paul Éluard with whom Yamanaka interacted, and 97 items of magazines and books, including signed first editions, in addition to photographs and handwritten manuscripts. A part of the collection is introduced in illustrations found in Yamanaka's publication "Surrealism: Materials and Reflections (Shururearisumu shiryo to kaiso)" (Bijutsu Shuppan-sha, 1971).
