Frequently Asked Questions (Shinanomachi Media Center)

General use

  1. Although I am not a member of the university, am I still able to enter the library?
    The following persons can enter the library.
    • Medical professionals and medical researchers (persons working at hospitals, etc., medical practitioners)
    • Students, faculty, and staff members from other universities
    • Employees of government offices and public interest corporations
    • Lawyers and legal office staff
    • Persons with a suitable affiliation (those working at companies, etc.)
    *Please ensure that you bring documentation verifying your affiliation and identity (ID card for place of employment, etc.). *Students must bring their student ID card and a letter of introduction issued by their university's library. *If you have any questions, please contact the Public Services Section in advance.
  2. Although I am not a member of the university, can I still make copies of library materials?
    The following persons can make copies of the library's materials. Our staff will photocopy them, so please ask at the counter.
    • Medical professionals and medical researchers (persons working at hospitals, etc., medical practitioners)
    • Students, faculty, and staff members from other universities
    • Employees of government offices and public interest corporations
    • Lawyers and legal office staff
    *Although persons affiliated to companies cannot make copies. *Fees vary according to your status. Please see "Visitors(External Users)". *If you have any questions, please contact the Public Services Section in advance.
  3. I would like to request a book from another campus.
    Please click on "Request" for your search result on KOSMOS and enter your Keio ID (keio.jp).
    • If you are unable to obtain Keio ID (keio.jp), you may login with your library card number.
    • For details, please see "Book Delivery/Requests" in KOSMOS Help.
    *You can also apply at the counter or via the online form. *Members of the Sanshikai and Kobaikai and alumni of the Graduate School of Medicine and Graduate School of Health Management cannot use interlibrary loans to request books from libraries at other campuses except the Library of Nursing and Medical Care.
  4. I would like to renew (extend) the loan period for the materials I have borrowed.
    • You can renew the materials you have out on loan by logging into My Library on KOSMOS using your Keio ID (keio.jp).
    • If you are unable to obtain Keio ID (keio.jp), you may login with your library card number.
    • For details, please see "Viewing Active Loans/Renewal" in KOSMOS Help.
    *Renewals cannot be made for unbound magazines, materials for which the deadline to return has elapsed or a reservation has been made, or if the period for renewal has reached the maximum.

Find/Search

  1. I would like to ask a question about the databases and searching for materials.
    We accept the questions on how to use the databases or conduct searches at the Reference Services Section.
  2. I would like to check the impact factor of a journal.
    You can check impact factors using Journal Citation Reports(JCR). If you have any questions, please ask at the Reference Services Section.
  3. I would like to know the publication criteria for the internet information sources introduced in "Links".
    The library' s publication criteria (excerpt) are as follows:
    • Expertise: The affiliation of the site provider is clearly indicated. The site provider has the required expertise.
    • Accuracy: Information sources are clearly indicated.
    • Newness of information: Dates are provided for the creation of and updates to sources. Sources have been updated to include relatively new information.
    • Impartiality: Commercial and non-commercial content is clearly indicated.
    Although only internet information sources that meet these criteria are published by the library, it is left up to users to examine and determine whether or not to use content.

Computers

  1. I would like to use the computers in the library.
    Persons affiliated to Keio University can use the computers in the library by acquiring a Keio University ITC account issued by the Information Technology Center (ITC). Please apply at Shinanomachi ITC. For further details, please see "Computer Account & Network".
    Members of the Sanshikai and Kobaikai and alumni of the Graduate School of Medicine and Graduate School of Health Management can use the electronic resource terminals in the library. For more details, please see "Walk-in Access to eResources".
  2. I would like to use the computer I brought with me.
    Persons who have acquired a Keio ID (keio.jp) can connect to the network and directly access electronic journals, e-books, and databases for which Keio has a subscription if they setup keiomobile2 (authenticated network connection) on their computer, tablet device, or smartphone. For details on how to setup the network, please see "wireless LAN/WiFi Service (keiomobile2)" Shinanomachi ITC), and contact Shinanomachi ITC if you have any questions.
  3. I would like to connect to Keio's WiFi service.
    If you have acquired a Keio ID (keio.jp), you can use the WiFi service by setting up keiomobile2 (authenticated network connection) on your device. For details on how to setup the network, please see "wireless LAN/WiFi Service (keiomobile2)" (Shinanomachi ITC), and contact Shinanomachi ITC if you have any questions.

Electronic resources

  1. I would like to use the e-journals and databases.
    Persons affiliated to Keio University can use the e-journals and databases. If you would like to use these on the common-use computers in the library or on campus, please obtain a Keio ITC account. For further details, please see "Computer Account & Network".
    Members of the Sanshikai and Kobaikai and alumni of the Graduate School of Medicine and Graduate School of Health Management can use the electronic resource terminals in the library. For more details, please see "Walk-in Access to eResources".
  2. Where can I use the e-journals and databases?
    They can be used from a computer that is online and connected to the Shinanomachi Campus network.
    I would like to use these inside the Media Center → Please see "Computer Account & Network".
    I would like to access these from off campus → Please see "Remote access".
  3. I would like to use the e-journals and databases while off campus.
    Students, faculty, and staff members can access the e-journals and databases remotely. Please log in via the Shinanomachi Media Center website using your Keio(keio.jp) ID. For more details, please see "Remote access".
  4. I am requested to enter a password when I try to open the full text of an e-journal.
    Please search for the name of the book or journal using KOSMOS and confirm whether or not Keio has a subscription.
    The subscription scope is displayed under the subscription service name "View Online". Please check whether or not the year of the volume or issue you would like to read is available.
    In cases where an ID and password are required, please click on the <English> section and confirm how to obtain a password. If you cannot resolve the issue, please contact the Reference Services Section.
  5. The screen goes blank midway through an operation.
    There is a possibility that your browser or antivirus software is not compatible.
    • Please try again after updating your browser and antivirus software to the latest versions.
    • Please try again after changing to a different browser.
    • If you have a separate device, please try again using this.
    • If you are still experiencing problems, please try again after waiting a while or contact the Reference Services Section.

Library materials purchase requests

  1. I would like the library to purchase materials.
    It can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months before you can use the materials you requested. After firstly reading "Purchase Requests", please apply using the online form. If you have any questions, please contact the Technical Services Section.
  2. I would like the library to purchase an e-journal.

Donations

  1. I would like to donate books.
    Please either take the books you wish to donate to the counter or send them to Technical Services by post or inter-campus mail.
    The Shinanomachi Media Center, as a library specializing in the life sciences at Keio University, also collects the works of tenured academic faculty and full-time staff members at the School of Medicine and Faculty of Nursing and Medical Care.
    If you have authored a published book, etc., please consider donating the work to the Shinanomachi Media Center. We welcome all types of books including those you personally authored, co-authored, edited, or translated as well as books for which you were responsible for preparing a chapter or section. These books will be used by and made available to view at the library for as long as possible.
    The Shinanomachi Media Center also accepts donations of books not currently in its collection that are considered to be necessary for research, education, and clinical practice in the life sciences.
    The titles of works by faculty and staff members that have been donated will also be published in the Keio Gijuku-ho.

  2. I would like to donate journals.
    We accept donations of journals that are considered to be necessary for research, education, and clinical practice in the life sciences if preserved in a good condition with no tears or hand-written notes inside.
    Continuous donations can be made if the journal is not already in the collection of the Shinanomachi Media Center. For back numbers of journals, they must be a complete set of volumes for a period of at least three years with no missing issues.
    If a journal is already in the collection of the Shinanomachi Media Center, they must be items for which you can give consent to the disposal of duplicate copies once any missing issues in the collection have been added. (However, due to disposal costs, please inform us of the title and volume and issue numbers of the journal in advance and only donate the issues that are currently missing from the library's collection.)
