Library Policies
Shinanomachi Media Center is responsible for providing patrons with a pleasant and productive environment for study and research, as well as to protect the library materials and facilities.
We ask for your cooperation in support of these efforts.
The following policies apply to library users in all public service areas:
Food and Drink *trial run from August 16, 2024.
This food and drink policy is in a trial operation.
We appreciate your feedback on this, as it helps us ensure that the libraries are welcoming spaces suitable for study.

It is the policy to maintain an environment appropriate for the protection of library materials and conducive to study in the library.
Snack foods and covered beverages are allowed in the following area.

Active Area [1F] | Hot and cold drinks with a lid such as pet bottles, water bottles, paper containers, tumblers with lids. *Only drinks in spill-proof containers are allowed near the library's computers. |
Only snacks that are NOT smelly or messy such as gummies, nuts, granola bars, and candy. *No food is allowed near the library's computers. |
All areas except Active Area | Hot and cold drinks in spill-proof containers such as pet bottles, water bottles. | No food is allowed. |
Notes:
- You CANNOT take in food that smells or is messy such as hot foods, potato chips, ice cream and cakes.
- You CANNOT take in drinks without a lid such as pull-tab cans, paper packs, containers with straws, cups without lid.
- The Library reserves the right to ask any patron to remove food and/or beverage from the Library based on this policy. In addition, failure to comply with posted restrictions or staff instructions regarding the consumption of food and beverages constitutes a violation of the Library Code of Conduct.
- Please take your trash home with you or dispose of it in the trash cans outside the gates.
- Clean up your spills or crumbs and throw your trash away. If additional assistance is needed, contact library staff at any desk. Please help preserve our collections and facilities.
- To prevent infection, please sanitize your hands before and after eating and drinking. Please refrain from entering the building if you are not feeling well.
Noise
The noise policy seeks to create a variety of study environments to meet the needs of all our users. In order to provide an environment that is conducive to quiet study, reading and collaboration, the library is divided into 3 noise level zones.

Notes:
- Please be considerate of other library users and ensure that the noise level is appropriate for the zone and not disruptive to other users.
- Typing on computers is permitted at all areas in the library.
- Use headphones when listening to audio and video.
- Set your cell phone to vibrate or silent mode. If you get a call while in the library, please take the call in the Collaborative Zones.
- You will need to bring your own headphones if required. We do not lend headphones.
- When necessary, library staff will remind library users of the noise policy. Library users being disturbed by noise are encouraged to ask library staff to intervene. Those users who do not comply with the noise policy after being warned will be asked to leave the library premise.
